Syn. 308.
A NATIVE of corn-fields and wade ground, more efpeci-
ally on a gravelly or fandy foil, flowering in June. This, though
not a very general fpecies, is much more fo than P. hybridum
publifhed in our firft volume.
The root is fmall and annual. Herb flender and delicate,
varying in fize. Stem alternately branched, round, leafy,
clothed with briftles which are lefs clofely prefled to the bark
than thofe of P. hybridum. Leaves bipinnate and cut. Flowers
folitary, terminating each branch, fmall, generally of a pale or
dull fcarlet colour, and extremely fhort-lived. I have once
found them double, in which cafe they lafted feveral days. In
general they fcarcely continue half a day. Calyx briftly, deciduous.
Petals narrow, obovate, often jagged. Stamina, as Mr.
Curtis well obferves, dilated upwards; in P. hybridum they
are linear-lanceolate. Antherse on a little foot-ftalk. Pollen
blue. Capfule oblong, [welling upwards, furrowed, moft briftly
in the upper part. Stigma of from 3 to 6 rays, downy.
