I n boggy fpots, on the moft barren fandy heaths only, this
Ruth is to be found, flowering in June and July. We conceive
that few plants are lefs promiflng to the agriculturift,
either as an indication of foil, or with refpeft to its own qualities.
Root perennial, of a few ftrong thick fibres. Leaves in
tufts, radical, numerous, fpreading at the bafe, but foon curved
inward; their form is narrow, channelled, but not keeled,
pointed; and they are hard, rigid, and very fmooth to the
touch. Stems about a foot high, ftraight, ftiff, round, fmooth,
naked (except at the very bottom), ending in one or two ere6l
branched panicles, whofe partial as well as general ftalks proceed
from reddifh -brown, fheathing, long, fmooth bradleae.
Flowers large compared with other common fpecies. Calyx
dark-brown, with a narrow filmy border. Stamina and ftyle
fliort; antherae and ftigmas long. Capfule obpvate, three-»
