Syn. 43a.
V ERY frequent in moift paftures and by road-fides,
bloffoming in the early part of July, and known at firft light
from our other lateral-flowering rulhes by its very denfe panicle.
On a more accurate fcrutiny a ftill more certain mark of
diftinftion will be found in its having only 3 ftamina to each
flower; a circumftance that rarely, if at all, takes place in
J. effufus, and never in any other fpecies with which we are
acquainted.
The root is horizontal, creeping and perennial. Stems
perfe&ly Ample, and deftitute of leaves, erect, round, minutely
llriated, pointed, but not fo lharp as to be pungent, about 2
feet high. Panicle burfting from a membranous-bordered
Allure about 6 inches below the fummit, compound, many-
flowered, denfe and globular, of a brownilh green. Each
leaf of the calyx is lanceolate, acute, marked with 2 prominent
ribs. Capfule polilhed, obovate, retufe or abrupt at the top,
infomuch as to be fometimes almofl: three-lobed, internally
confifting of a Angle cell.
It is neceflary to correct a miftake in our remark under
J. glaums, vol. 10. p. 665. The word effufus in the fourth
line from the bottom ought to be conglomeratus.
