not ciliated leaves. E v en his own fpecimen h ow e v e r (which
is ce rtainly the fame fpecies as ours) has tra c e s o f them j and
in f a d , the number and denfity o f thefe ciliae are v e ry variable.
T h e flow e r s, w h ich are te rminal, and often fo rm a kind of
fm a ll eo rymb u s, are extremely, b e au tifu l w h en c lo fe ly examined
; thofe that appear earlieft are moft deeply coloured.

it appears he took up the plant from other authors. How e v e r
this may be, the fynonyms o f B re yn iu s and M o rifon quoted
in S p . P I. c e rtain ly belong to S . H ir cu lu s , and the re ft probably
to our plant. D r . S to k e s ’ s c o n je d u r e (Bot. A r r . 4 3 4 ) is perhaps
ne areft the tru th, that Linnaeus’s S. autumnalis is a c iliated
v a rie ty o f S. H ircu lu s .

to le rably applicable to the plant. W e p re fe r the name o f
aizoides, becaufe it is undoubtedly r ig h t, as w e ll as exprefiive ■,
w h e re a s that o f autumnalis is not on ly , as above faid, uncerta
in , but improper fo r a plant that flow e rs du rin g moft part
o f the fummer. r
