in the la ft c en tury, and our w ild fpecimens were gathered lath
fum m e r in a morafs about the centre o f the fame moor by
M r . O ke ll o f C h e fte r . I t is p e ren nial, flowering in A u gu ft,
and m a y b e cultivated in a m o ift border o f b o g earth.
T h e roots are fibrous, th row in g out c reeping le a fy fcions.

the bafe , m an y - r ib b e d , and furniflied above th e ir c law with

fc a rc e ly n e ceflary to indicate a mode o f diftin gu ifliin g this from
S. aizoides, v. i . t. 3 9 ; y e t , as th e y have been confounded,
w e m a y remark th at th e fuperior g e rm en at once characterizes
S. Hirculus,
