£ 1Q U A L LY common with the laft in moilt boggy places,
flowering in July,
Root perennial, a little creeping. Stem about the height
of J. conglomeratus, but of a paler hue, and more foft, not at
all pungent. Panicle lateral, much branched, loofe and
fpreading, compofed of a great multitude of pale-green
flowers, whofe calyx-leaves are narrow, pointed, 3-ribbed.
Stamina 6, very rarely 3 only, Capfule finall, obtufe, pale-
brown.
The pith of this ruth, as well as of J. conglomeratus, is
ufed for making wicks to candles that are required to bum
without fnuffing, though not wanted to {how a ftrong light.
The Hems are fometimes platted into chair-bottoms, bafkets,
&c. but are inferior in foftnefs and pliability, as well as in
length, to the Scirpus lacujlris, t. 666,
