1 -2 ft. long, suberect, with root-fibres from the lower half, sometimes
excurrent and whip like at the tip, flat ou the back, bisulcate
on the lace, copiouslj' pinnate, the branches pryamidal aud
decompound. Leaves of the lower plane close ou the branchlets,
spaced on the branches aud stem, aseeiidiiig, lanceolate or oblong-
hinceolate, acute, -J -i iu. long, bright green aud moderately firm
in texture, more produced ou the upper side of the midrib, laterally
attached, not imbricated over the stem, broadly rounded and shortly
ciliated ou the upper side at the base, truncate and auricled ou the
lower ; leaves of the upper plane a third to half as long, oblique
ovate or oblong, acute, much imbricated. Spikes J - J iu. loug,

compound. Leaves of the lower plaue crowded and rather
asoendiiig ou the branches, spaced ou the main stem, oblong-
lanoeolate, obtuse, i-J - ill. long, bright green, firm in texture
unequal-sided, not ciliated, auricled on both sides at the base,
dilated aud broadly rounded ou the upper side, aud much imbricated
over the stem ; leaves of the upper plaue a third as long, oblique
ovate, acute. Spikes square, 4“ 1 iu. loug, 1 lin. diam. ; bracts
ovate, acute, strongly keeled.

all the upper margin shortly ciliated, its base rounded, and
a little imbricated over the stem ; leaves of the upper plane half as
long, ovate, acute. Spikes short, square, 4 lin. d iam .; bracts
ovate, acute, strongly keeled.
Var. khasiensis Baker. — Leaves of the lower plane more
numerous, closer and more spreading, uarrower and more acute.
