Filix hemisphæriæ borealis, nempe Europæ et America,. Frondes f a s ciculatoe,
pinnatæ, pin n is p innatifidis; fertiles dissimiles, pinnis multoties minoribus
angustioribus marginibus insigniter revolutis, indusium mentientibus, soros tegentibus.

A second species has heen generally considered as belonging to this Genus, A. P m n s y l -
v a n ic a ; but I have shown in the “ F lo r a B o r e a li-A n u r ic a n a ," that it is by no means
different from the European plant. As a genus it is certainly very nearly allied to P o l y p
o d ium , scarcely differing but in the altered condition of the fertile fronds.

Presi has, I think, with much judgment, restricted the genus P o ly p o d ium to those
Ferns which have the naked globose sori, and the veinlets simple or forked. Thus circumscribed,
it is still an extensive Genus, some inhabiting temperate regions, but the greater
number of species, the tropics.
