The piece of domestic furniture engraved below, made, we believe, of silver,
is preserved in a collection antiquities-at Paris. The lady
the head was, without doubt, intended to be the representation of a belle; but
it would not be imagined at first sight that she was at the same time designed
to serve the purpose of a b e ll.^ i belongs to the ■ seventeenth' cen|firy, when
the luxury of wires, by winch the occupant of the parlour put in motion the
bell in the kitchen, was not yet general.
