dinmgsih consented, making the requests which had been suggested by Batdra
Sdkra. To thfege Batdra Guru assented, adding, f§| if you have success in
M this war, I will appoint you sovereign of the heavens for 6ne year. You
“ -shall have power over ail the gods, and the Widaddris shall be your atten-
“ dants $ and as long as you live .you shall have power to visit Suraldya at
i your pleasure.” This said, Batdra Guru disappeared.
On the next day Wardiningsih prepared for his journey to Ima imantdka, the
country of Détia Kewdcha, and on his way thither foil in with the Widaddris,
Su Prdba and Wila Tdma, who had been sent by Bdtdra Sabra. ÿVardirtingsih,
on his arrival at the Rasdksdhs capital, commissioned these Widaddris tô
enter the palace and feign an attachment foc Détia Kewdcha. Détia Kewdcha
no sooner beheld them, than being thrown off his guard, he declared, that
the object of the war being thus attained without trouble, he would enjoy
himself at his ease. Then dressing himself in his princely robes, and perfuming
himself as a bridegroom, he approached Mu Praha, and taking hef
on his knee «haunted a song, which so delighted her that §he fell asleep.
Wardiningsih on this entered into her ear-stud and awoke her. Detàa Kewdcha
then urged her to gratify his passion, but -she refused, and required, as a
mack of confidence, that he would trust her with the secret of his power.
This he refused, until she was about to stab herself, when he whispered in
her car that.he was invulnerable except within bis throat, if any one
injured that part In the least he must instantly die. Wardiningsih thus
ascertaining his vulnerable point, escaped with the Widaddris and ascended
to Battra Matera in Suraldya.
■DétiaKewécha then collecting, his forces proceeded to the War with a countless
host, laying waste foe country until he arrived near Tânda Waru, Where
he halted to make preparations for foe attack. The heavens now shook,
and Nardka emitted smoke. The .gods trembled with fear, and; the witid,
charged Wifo the gross stench of the Rasdksa, almost overpowered them. -
Wardmrngsih having arrived at the abode of SdJcra, the great bell ÇgcCHta)
was struck, when.tthe gods immediately assembled. The feröes of Suraldya
then moved on, Wardiningsih following in a splendid chariot. Having thrown
off the Panditcfs garment, he now appeared richly clothed hr the character
of Arjéna, -adorned with gold and costly gems. The chariot had formerly
belonged to Rdma, and had been preserved by Batdra Gûru, when Mdma
committed himself to the flames.

The battle commenced, and the forcés of the Rasdksa being most hume*
rods and powerful,, were about to carry all before them, when Gdtot Kdcha
arrived, and taking part wifo Wardiningsih, turned the tide of the battle in
favour of the gods, plucking up the mountains by the roots and casting them

by Media Tung’gara, shot an arrow a t Wardiningsih, which the latter
caught under his arm, and feigning death fell to the ground. Great was the
grief of Sémar, and.of all his other attendants ; but Détia Kewdcha approaching
burst oat into a loud lough, when Wardiningsih, who had Watched his opportunity,
observing the Rasdksa’s mouth open, instantly rose, and struck the
arrow info it and so killed him.
. Gdtot Kdcha, whoin consequence of the absence of Aijuna on a penance
for three years, had been sent to- recall him, and who had discovered him
by the appearance of his attendant Sémar, now approached Wardiningsih,
and kissing his • feet, informed him of the- sorrow of Sena and Dérma
Wdngsa at his absence, on; which. Wardiningsih desired him to return and
report what he had seen.
He then proceeded, attended hy the victorious host, to foe dwelling of
Batdra Gdru, called Papdrmdrna ; on which Batdra Gdru assembling the
gods, and permitting Wardiningsih to approach and kiss his feet, declares to
him that he was not forgetful of his promise, and would forthwith fulfil it.
He then declarer! him sovereign-of Suraldya;. under the title of Prdby Anili
KM, and gave Mm free access to every part of-foe heavens. Arjéna then
visited the seven’ quarters of Suraldya, in which was the abode of the
Widaddris, and assumed the sovereignty accordingly 5 while Gatot Kdcha,
proceeding to Amérta, informed Séna and Dérma Wdngsa of what Had
passed* There were also present at his relation Ndkbla Sa déwa, Batdra
Krésna, Sdmbu, and Panchcewdla, all equally anxious to know foe fate of
Arjéna. Déwi K ind, the mother of iPmukhm, having calculated on the
death of Arjéna, and made preparation for burning herself in eonsëqüence,.
was oveijoyed at this unexpected good news; and Dérma Wdngsa, foe
sovereign of Amérta, gave a grand entertainment, in which dhe~ Bedayas
danced to the sound of the music, while Gdtot Kdcha related the feats of
Arjéna.
