Hookerian Lichen.
CRYPTOGAMIA Alga,
Gen. Char. Male,, scattered warts.
Female, smooth shields or tubercles, in which the
seeds are imbedded.
Spec. Char. Imbricated, depressed; segments bluntly
lobed and notched, radiant,- somewhat striated,
silver-grey ; black and naked beneath. Shields
black, with elevated, crenate, grey margins.

T h i s v e r y eleg ant species does not a g re e w ith a n y specimens
re ce iv ed from the learned Sw ed ish botanists, either b y M r .
B o r re r or ourselves. I t seems most allied to L . qffinis, t. 983,
o r some o f th at trib e . T h e frond s consist o f sm all, s ilv e r -g re y ,
im b r ic a te d , s lig h t ly e le v a ted , o b long portions or leaflets, whose
d isk is ob scu re ly s t r ia te d ; th e ir m a rg in s tum id , c renate, p a le r ;
th e ir extrem itie s d ila ted a n d r a d ian t, e sp e c ia lly su ch as form
the c ircumference o f th e c ru s t. T h e shields a re ab u n d an t, a
lit t le ra ised , o f a moderate size, b la c k , o p aq u e , s c a r c e ly conc
a v e or c o n v e x , w ith a p rom in en t, c renate, inflexed border,
o f the substance an d p a le w h it ish h u e o f the crenatures o f th e
fronds.
