Spec, Char. Cruft grayith white, cracked and tef-
fellated, with a black "edge. Shields funk, irregular,
concave, black, often two or three in each
portion of the cruft,

a s D r . A ch a r iu s (in his excellent w o rk on L ic h e n s , la te ly
publifhed in Sw eden ) ju ft ly obferves, is einereus o f mo ft authors
w e kn ow it to b e the cinerafcens o f D r . W ith e r in g , b y a fp e -
c im en from h im fe lf to M r , D . T u rn e r, in w h ich the m a rg in o f
th e fhields is m e re ly a little g ra y ifh , not w h ite as in common
ater. H e therefore erroneoufly quotes P ro f. H o ffm an n ’ s figure ,

T h i s p lan t is remark able for h a v in g frequently 2 or more
o f its ho llow irregu lar fhields fituated in one portion o f the
c ru ft, but n o t d o le together. I t grow s on ftone w a lls as w e ll
as rock s. O n gran ite the cruft is mo re g ra y th an on calcareous
ftones, in w h ich ftate it is H o ffm an n ’ s Patellaria multi-
