Female, fmooth Ihields or tubercles, in which the
feeds are imbedded.
Spec. Char. Cruftaceous, cracked, greyilh-white,
with a very narrow black edge. Shields minute,
very numerous, roundith, black, with a white margin
incorporated with the cruft.

a narrow black m a rg in ; fo that when fe v e ral plants g row to ge th
e r, they are diftinguifhed b y a black line . T h e wh ole fu r -
fa c e is fu ll o f little fiffures, fep arating it into fm a ll an gular po rtions.
In the centre o f each o f thefe portions the fru c t ific a tion
begins, being at firft (according to D r . Bab in g ton ’ s obfer-
vations) a gre enilh fp eck, foon tu rning g re y , then b row n -red ,
and finally black. In this laft ftag e , the (hields r ife out o f the
c ru ft and often become con v e x , h a v in g a broad wh ite elevated
m a rg in , n o tv ifib le in a you ng ftate becaufe incorporated w ith
the c ru ft .------- T h e p ro gre fs o f this little vegetable has not befo
re been noticed. T h e figu re in Flora Danica reprefents it
w e ll o f its natural fiz e , but wants a magnified p ortion to make
i t intelligible.
