acute prickly termination of the fecond leaf ; firft lobe on the upper fide
largeft, of an oblique car-ihape, creft, terminating in a iharp fpine, has a
kind of projeaion or appendage on the outer fide in the broadeft part,
which, as well as the little projeaions on both fides, terminates in a fmall
fliarp fpine ; the other lobes on the upper fide approach to this in fliape,
but are fmaller, fpiny and crea ; lobes on the lower fide obliquely ear-
fhaped, grow in an horizontal direaion, making a very acute angle with
the nerve, and, like thofe above, are armed with iharp fpincs.
Seed veffels placed in rows, Tab. 26. Tig. 3. on the plane diik of the fecond
leaves ; near the top of the plant there arc only two regular rows one
on each fide the nerve ; lower down they are placed on the lobes, fomewhat
irregularly, from one to five on each, (fee Fig. 3 . ; lower half of the
firft leaf barren.
The Polipodium lobatum, Plall. Plift. 1 7 1 2 , and Flo. Ang. 459, is
doubtlefs a young plant of Polipodium aculeatum ; of this I am certain

Polipodium aculeatum grows from the fiflures o f rocks in damp places ;
on rocks near the bottom o f Benroyd Clough, Norland ; and in a little
wood called Toad-Holes, in Sowerby Dean, both near Halifax.
