^ p H E root is black, hard, covered with fcales, and emitting numerous
ftrong black fibres.
Leaves from five to twelve inches long, lance-fliaped above, the two
fides rounded at the bottom, fo as to give a cordated appearance to the
lower extremity of the leaf, and receiving the rib in the hollow dent; the
rib IS brown or blackiilr, hard, gloffy, having brown chaffy fcales, and is
deftitute of leaf about one-third o f its length ; the leaf is hard, tough, and
firm to the touch, with numerous parallel veins running obliquely from
the central nerve to the margin, o f a dark flrining green above, paler underneath,
and often more or lefs undulated at the edge.
