^ 11 ^HE roots are very fma-11, confifting of brown capillary fibres loofely
JL affixed in the crevices o f moift rocks.
Leaves five or fix inches long ; the rib o f a blackiffi purple colour,
fmooth, hard, ffiining, and is deftitute of leaf about one-third of its
length from the root. The general figure is lance-ffiaped.
Lobes fifteen or twenty pairs, the loweft pairs moft remote, the reft
nearer and nearer by a flow gradation to the top, all o f them placed oppofite
; their figure approaches to an oval, largeft below, gibbous on the
upper fide at the bafe, and obliquely cut off on the lower, rounded or
blunt at the extremity ; the lobe is crenated with ten or twelve dents, its
bafe above and below entire.
