T e r r e s t r i a l , usually pseudo-bulbous. Pseiido-stems variable in length, often tall,
sometimes absent. Leaves membranous, more or less elliptic-oblong, plaited. Inflorescence
u s u a l l y from amongst the leaves and axillary, or from the side of the stem or p.seudobulb.
Floiaers usually rather large, sometimes inconspicuous, in erect racemes. Sepals
sub-equal, usually spreading, more or less lanceolate or oblong, rarely connivent. Petals
u s u a l l y narrower than the sepals. Lip variously attached to tbe column either to its
base or to its whole length, usually 3-lobed, the apical lobe often bifid, the disc usually
lamellate. Column short, somotimes dilated at the base or apex. Author usually conical,
•with an acuminate lip, 2-cclled. Pollinia 8, waxy, clavate or elliptic, often unequal,
c o h e r i n g in fours to a granular caudicle, or the whole eight inserted on a single caudicle
a n d attached to a gland. Capsules ellipsoid, drooping. Distrib. About 80 species ;
t r o p i c a l or sub-tropical.
I n this genus the iníloresoence is produaed on an undeveloped psoudo bulb which also bears the
young leaves. The latter (except ia C. olümmfclia, C. eiensiñora, and G. gracilh), do not obtain their
lull size or develope their petioles until after flowering has ceased.
