out, 2 flower, 3 apes of ovary, column with anther in situ, and lip, in profile, 4 section of the
foregoing, 5 lower surface of anther, 6 poUinia; all enlarged.
3. VANDA CRISTATA, Lindi, iu "Wall. Cat. 7328; Gcii. and Spec.
Orch. 216.
Stem 3 to 12 in. long, stout, covei-cd with old slieatlis. Leaves numerous, nai-rowly
oblong, conduplicate, tnmcatcly and unequally bilobod at the apex, dilated towai-ds the
jointed widely shoathiug base; length 3 to 4 in., breadth (when flattened out) -G or
•7 in. Racemes equal to or shorter than tho leaves, axillaiy, 2- or 5-flowcrod. Floivers
1-5 to 2 in. across. Sepals sub-equal, spreacKng, oblong, obtuse. Fetals oblong, narrower
than the sepals. Z?> longer tlmn the sepals, aduatc to the base of tho column; tho
spur widely infundibuHform, half as long as tho stalked ovary, its mouth with
triangular crect side lobes; the apical lobe oblong, its apex with two divaricate obloug
lobules, and under the apex a horn-like fleshy beak pointing downwards, tho upper sui-faco
with five earuxiculate ridges. Column short, with no foot. Anther depressed, with a
mesial ridge; polUnia ovoid, attached by a broad short caudiclc to a quadrate gland.
Capsidc\ narrowly davate, 2 to 2'5 in. long. Lindi. Sert. Oreh. frontkp., fig. 3 ; in 13ot.

Sikkim, at elevations from 2,000 to 6,000 feet, common; Pantling, No. 118. "Westward
to Kumaon, but not common. Bhutan, Sylliet.
The sepals, petals and ovaiy arc of a pale olivaceous green or yellowish ; tho Hp
is also green, but boldly blotched with dull pinplish-brown. The pollen-masses, after
removal from tho anther, fall forward owing to the bending of the caudiclc, until they
ultimately rest on the gland.
There ai'e two foi-ms of this in Sikkim;, one found at elevations of 2,000 to 4,000
feet, with racemes producing as many as foui- or five flowers an inch in diameter; the
other with flowers nearly twice as large as the former, but with only two of them
on tho raceme. The latter is most common at elevations of about 5,000 feet. In
structure and coloration the flowers of tho two are exactly alike. Tho second is the
form figured here.
PLATE 2S7.—Vanda crisiain. Lindi. A plant, of nalnral size. Fig. 1 bract, ovary, column with
anthor in situ, and lip in profile, 2 section of the upper part of the foregoing, 3 column with anthor,
front view, 4 apes of colnma, pollinia, and oaudicle in sUii, 5 lower surface of anther, 6 pollinia after
removal, the eaudicie having bent; ail enlarged.
4 . V.\XDA PUMILA, Hook. Fil. FI. Br. Ind.- "VI, 53.
Stem and haves as in V. cristuia and V. alpina. Racemes much shorter than the leaves,
2-flowered. Flowers 1 in. across, drooping, floral Iract minute. Sepals and petals subequal;
the lateral sepals sliglitly broader, oblong, obtuse, curvcd, connivent. JAp shorter
than tho sepals, the base with a wide infimdibuHform sac with small triangular oblong
hide lobes; apical lobe large, fleshy, broadly ovate, tho apex sub-truncate, tho upper surface

with two small knobs near the apex and foui- to six elioi-t thickened ridges in the centre.
Column thick, short, with no foot. Antiisr depressed, slightly apiculate behind; pollinia
broadly ovate, their apices divaricate; the caudicle quadrate; the gland large, broad,
angled. Capsule davate, ridged, 2-75 in. long. Hook. fil. Fl. Br. Ind VI, 53. Vanda
cristata, var. B., Lindi. Fol. Orch. 10.
Sikkim, in the bottoms of hot valleys; in flower during May; Pantling, No. 73.
The flowers are cream-coloured, the lip having long red marldngs, and tlie sopáis
and petals boing slightly speckled with the same colour. They are vory swjet-scented.
P l . ^ t e 2S8,— Vanda pumila, Huok. 31. A •^lo.n.i, of njtural #iZ3. Fig. I bract, stalked ovary, column
Tvith autber in situ, and lip, 2 lip, 3 column ' with anther in situ, front viow, 4 under surface of antlier,
6 pollinia with the oaudicle estemled and the gUnd, 6 the samp after removal, the caudicle having bent
and brought the pollinia into con:act with the gland; alhenlarijed.
5 . VANDA ALPINA. Lindi. Fol. Orchid, 10.
Stem and Icares as in V. cristata. Racemes much shorter than the leaves, 2-flowcred,
or flowjrs solitary, nodding, -75 in. long. Sepals and petaU sub-equal, oblong, blunt,
ratlur connivent tliau spreading, the petals somewhat smaller than the sepals. Lip
adnate to the column, gibbous but not saccate or spm-red at the base; side lobes shallow,
rounded; apical lobe ovate, obloug, obscurely trilobulate towards the apes; tlie side
lobules small, entire; tlie apical lobule retuse, its upper surface with shallow ridges.

Sikkim, at Tendong. devation 5,000; in flower dm-ing July; Pantling, No. 164.
Westward to Gharwal. Khasia Hills; Hooker and Thomson.
This has pretty nearly the colouring of V. cristata, Lindi., but tho lip is diiierent,
there being no sac at its base, but only an expansion ; the anterior lobe, moreover, has
neither shallow smooth ridges nor is it earunoulate like that of V. cristata. In habit
and foliage it resembles V. pumila and V. cristata.
PLATK 2'iQ.— Vanda alpina, Lmdl, A plant, of natural size. Fig. 1 a flower, 2 bract, ovary,
column with anther in situ, and lip, 3 section of the foregomg, 4 column with anther in situ, 5 luidor
surface of anther, 6 pollinia and caudicle iu situ on the apex of Üie column, 7 the same some time
after removal ; all enlarg d.
51. Saccolabium, Blume.
Epiphytes without pseudo-bulbs. Leaves coriaceous, flat or conduplicate, often keded,
Injlorescence leaf-opposed or supra-axillary, racemose, sub-corymbose, umbdlate or paaided;
floral Iract niinute, much shorter than the stalked ovary. Sepals and petals adnate to the
column, sub-equal, usually spreading, sometimes reflexed. Lip sessile on the footless
column, consisting of a cylindric or saccate spur, without calli and non-septate, (with calH
and horizontal septum in 5. trichromim), with or without small lateral lobes; the apical
lobe small, without a scale or callus under the short broad troncato column, often hairy.
