Height of the whole plant about 6 or 8 inchcs. Stem 1-5 to 2-5 in. long. Leaves
three or foui-, ratlier crowdcd, ovate, sub-acute, coriaceous; lengtli about 1 in,, breadtli
•65 to -75 in.; the petiole short, broad and sheathing at the base. Peduncle of the spike
3 in. long, covered with sparse flexuosc -white hairs and bearing two sheathing acute
bracts about -35 in. long. Spike under I in. long, 2- to 3-flowered; /ora? tract lanceolate,
membranous, sparsely pubescent, shorter than the pubescent ovary. Flowers about '35 in.
long. Sepals ovate-lanceolate, all free, spreading and pubescent outside. Feials obliquely
lanceolate, acute, curved, spreading. Lip longer than the sepals, the basal part
«•yarbiforuily saccate, having a single paii- of teeth situated at tlie margin ncai- the base
and two calli within the sac; the terminal iobe deeply divided into two large divergent
cuneate-sabquadi-ate lobules erose on the oiiter margin. Column %\-ith eight tooth-like ei'ect
processes in fi-ont; stigmas united to form a narrow band across the column.

Only two specimens have as yet bcea gathered of this plant. The dorsal sepal
does not cohere with the petals, and the stigmas are united to form an antieous
band; but in all other respects this has the characters of the other species of the genus
to wliich we have referred it.
The colom- of the sepals and petals is pale brown, the lower part of the lip being
yellow and its apical lobes white. The leaves are of a blaekiah-pm-ple on the upper
siu-face, the midiib being white.

•\Vliole plant 2 to 10 in. Stem passing into the peduncle and, like it, glabrous.
Leaves linear, acuminate, clasping, sessile on the hyaline truncate sheaths, gradually passing
into lineal- bracts upwards. Raccme -S to 2 in. long, densely-flowered, nearly glabrous;
Jloral Iract ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, much longer than tlie ovary. Sepals unequal;
the dorsal the broader, concave, ovate; the lateral pair obKquely lanceolate, connivent.
Fetah, like the lateral sepals, falcatcly oblong, blunt, united with the dorsal sepal to fonn
a hood over the column. Lip as long as the sepals, with a small cymbiform sac at its
base bearing inside two inward-pointing teetli, and two uan'ow lamellce near the midrib:
apical lobe short, sub-quadrate, entii-e and mth a fleshy convexity situated ^^•itI^in the
outer angles. Column very sliort, with two wings at its apex covering the anther; aj'ms
of rostellum short, stout, jjarallel. Anther depressed, very shortly beaked, covcred by the

Throughout the whole of India in gi-assy places on the plama and at low elevations ou
the hills. Also in Ceylon, China, Java, the Philippines and in Affghanistaa.
The flowers aro white or pink, the lip being pm-ple at the base and yellow at
the apex. A variable plant, in some parts of India assuming a tali slender liabit and
sometimes attaining a height of IG or 18 inches. In one form the flowers are larger
than in the type, the lip is blunt and white at the base. lu another form the lip ia
altogether white.

Plant 4 to 9 in. high, the stem forming about one-thii'd of tho whole and
two to four oblong-ovate acute leaves with short petioles passing into colo\u-ed sheatha
at the base, 1 to 1'25 in. long and "65 to "75 in. broad. Peduncle laxiy-pubescent
and bearing one or two linear-lanceolate bracts. Raceme 1 to 2 in. long, laxly-flowered,
its rachis with a few haii's. Flowers -25 in. long; floral hract almost equalling the ovary
in length, ovate, acuminatc. Sepals unequal; the dorsal ovate, acute; the lateral pair
narrowly lanceolate, spreading, gi-een. Fetals falcate, sub-acute, connivent. Lip saccately
cymbifoiin, the apical lobe small and mth introflexed margins, the sac bidcntato
wthin. Column short, broad, marginally winged below. Anther beaked; pollinia clavate,
attached to a broad caudicle with revolute margins about equal in length to themselves,
the gland oblong-quadi-ate. Stigmas oval, lying on each side of the anther. Hook,

The flowers are pink passhig into white, except the lateral sepals which arc often
grcen. The floral bract is pink, and the leaves are velvety green mth a pure white
line along tho midrib.
