Vol. LXrV, Pt. 2, 3il.
Height of the whole plant 6 to 9 in. Boots short, tubercular. Stem 6 to 9 in.
long, the nodes slightly swollen. Leaves few, scattered, glabrous, Knear-lanceolato and
much reduced in the flowering plant ; in the young plant -35 to -35 in. long, ovate
and shortly petioiate. Raccnic le&s than 1 in. long, pubescent, 1- to 2-flowered. Flowers
•25 to -3 in. long; /oral Iraot ovate, shorter than the ovary. Sepals oblong, curved,
connate for oae-tliird their length ; the dorsal concave, shorter tbaa the lateral pair.
Petals broad, sub-quadrate, with an oblique midi-ib. Lip slightly exceeding the sepals,
abruptly doflexed from the saccate base ; tho limb very shortly clawed, deeply divided
into two linear obliquely sub-acute divergent lobules separated by a wide sinus. Column
with two pyriform processes immediately beneath the rosteUum. AntUr-heak decuiwed.
Follinia sub-ovate, divergent when released from tho anther ; the caudiclo acuminate
and the gland oblong.
Sikldm, above Sureil; elevation 6,500 feet; flowering in August; Pantling No. 338.
A veiy distinct species named in honour of M. Franchet, tho distmguished French
botanist who has so successfully elaborated the extraordinarily rich collections made by
the Abbé Delavay in the highlands of south-western China. This species is intermediate
between Cheirostylis and Zeiuine. It resembles ClieirostyUs in having a connate
perianth, but the column is rather that of Zeuxine.
The flowers are white with. a dash o£ green near the base of the lip.
PLATE 398.—F r a w h c t i m a , . Kmg and Paatling. Two plants in flower, and the upper part
of the stems of two in leaf, of natural si:e. Pig, 1 floral bract, ov.ir/ and flowor, 2 apes of ovary,
column with anther in situ, stigma (i) and lip, Mûn from the side, 3 the petals, 4 lip, 5 section of lij

processes (c p), stigma («} and rostellum (r), 8 anther, 9 poUinia; all enlarged.
8 3 . Anoectochilus, Blmne.
Tcn-estrial herbs with succulent stems decumbent at tho base and with stout hairy
roots. Leaves thick, ovate or lanceolate, with petioles sheatlied at the base ; peduncle
and raclds of spike or raceme glandular-pubescent. Sii>aU free, unequal ; tho dorsal
smaller, ovate, and with the beaked iKtah forming a hood over tho column; tho

lateral pair free or united at the base, s]>reading, larger than the dorsal. Lip adnate
to the end of the column by a long toothed or pectinatc rorely entire claw, saccate or
spurred at the base, the sac produced beyond tho bases of the sepals or quite covcred by
them, its interior %vitii two tooth-like or luminar calli ; terminal lobe with two large
diverging oblong or sub-quadi'uto usually truncate lobules. Column short, with appendages
in front. Aniiter 2-cellcd; rostellum twisted; two and bifid, rarely four, clavatc,
lamellate, narrowed into pseudo-caudicles, or attached to true caudicles and inserted on a
narrow gland. Stigmas usually two, situated one at each side of tho roatolluni, or united
into a transverse band on tiie colmiin beneath it, rarely single and undivided. Specics
about forty; natives of India, and of tho Malayan and Pacific Islands.
The genus Anmdochilus was foimded by Blume in 1?25. The same author, in 1853, instituted his
genus Odoniochihis, separating it from An<Bctochilus on account of the shorter sac of its lip auJ of its
being concealed by the bases of tho sepals; and also becaiiso of tho more developed columnar processes.
Lindley had, in 184.0, founded his genus Eicmaria, which he differentiated from AnactochHus chiefly by
the claw o£ the lip being entire and by its sao being hidd£u by tho bases of the petals. These distinctiona
appear to be insufficient to justify generic rank; and as Sir Joseph Hooker, iu a note under Odontochihis
Clarkei, ia his loones Plantarum (t, 2168), gives it as his opuiiou that Odontochilus and AnceotochUm
should bo united, we now venture, not only to carry out tho uniou, hut also to include JlamuriH. "Wo
feel tho more justified in doing this, smco dissection of living flowei-s of seveial of tho species included
in Odontoehihis as it stood, discloses divergencies in the -stigniatio character •\>'hich appear to ua of moro
importance than those depended upon for the separation of tho three genera just mentioned. In the
genus thus constituted the pollen-masses taper into long caudicle-like prolongations by which they are
attached to tho gland. Theso pseudo-caudicles are composed of lamelliiorm grams connected to each
other by clastic threads.
Stigmas two, distinct and situated one on each side of the rostellum.
Spur or sac of lip conical and projecting beyond the bases of the
sepals, not septate, tho contained calli oblong.
Claw of lip with long fimbriate teeth; petals with long narrow
curved beaks 1. A. lioxluryhii.
Claw of lip with short teeth; petals with short broad beaks . . . A. ¡Sikkinwisis.
Stigmas two, united by their inner margins and forming a transverse
band across the front of tlie columu below the rostellum.
Claw of Up deeply toothed or fimbriate.
Sao of lip covered by tlio generally united bases of the sepals,
globose, didymous, septate and with a usually recurved
conical spur-like callus in each chamber 3. A. lancoolaiut.
Sao of lip oblong, parallel with tho ovary, not bifid, containing
two sub-quadrate lamellar colli Ji. A. grandifiorvt.
Sac of lip globose, shortly bifid, containing two short conical
teeth 5. A. Elmsii.
Claw of lip not toothed 6. A. crispus.
Stigma one, undivided, occupying tho front of tho column below the
rostellum and above the columnar processes A. iortus.
