The sepals and petals are yellow with bold horizontal and vertical brown markings,
the lip is paler, more ochraueous than yellow, and the lobes of the mesochile aro pink;
the cohmiu is yellow, boldly marked with purple near the base.

EpiphjH;ic, with short stems and no pseudo-bulbs, leaves flat, c
and flowers as in Phalcennjim, but the column narrowly winged and the foot long and
forming, with the sides of the lip, a conical sac beaiing the lateral and apical lobes at
its mouth. Species 5; Indian and Malayan.

Moots fiat, much shorter than the leaves. Stem 1 in. long. Leaves about three,
pendulous, oblong, slightly oblanceolate, tlie edges sub-undulate; the apex bkmt, minutely
and obli(iucly notched, gradually tapered to the sessile shortly sheathed base; length 6
to 8 in., breadth 1-35 to 2 in. Inflorescenoe pendulous from the stem beneath the leaves
and shorter than them, slender" below, somewhat thickened upwards, sometimes with
a sliort branch. I lowers '5 or -C in. long; Jloral Iract ovate, acute, minute. Sepals
unequal; the dorsal oblong-obtuse, blunt; the lateral pair shorter but broader, falcate,
their apiccs obKquely truncate. Petals as long as tho lateral sepals, oblong, blunt. Lip
adnate to tho foot of the column, the hypochile forming a conical sac with two erect
very broad ridged fleshy truncate lobes; epicbile obovate, narrow at the base, the apex
broad and emarginate, its disc with a forked appendage. Column stont, shortly winged,
the foot short. Anther depressed; rostellum long, narrow. Pollmia ovoid, attached by

The ground colour- of the flowers is pale ochraceous yellow witli purple markings on
tlie lip and column. The biises of the petals and sepals are slightly mottled with pink.

Eoots numerous, long and flat, forming large tufts. Leaves few, pendulous, often
solitary, sometimes absent, nan-owly clliptic-oblong, acute, tapering to tho sessile base;
length 3 to 5 in., breadth -G to -8 in. Jiaccmes longer than the loaves, pendulous,
G- to 8-flowcrcd. Flotvers -8 in. across; bract broadly triangular, minute. Sepals unequal,
blunt; the dorsal oblong, slightly oblanceolatc; the lateral pair broader, elliptic, bkmt.
Petals obovate, blunt, shorter than the sepals. Lip adnate to the foot of tho column,
shorter than the petals; liypocliilo produced below into a stout sub-cylindric spru-, and
sending upward two long narrow falcate backward-pointing lobes; the epicliile spathulateoblongC
entire, attached to the hypochile near its base, ninning parallel to it for part
of its length and then cui-ving foi-wards, its upper sm-face with a forked appendage.

The colour of the flowers is a deHcate pale purple, the anther and epicliile of the
lip being dark pm-ple. Specimens with white flowers are not uncommon; but, after
fertilization has been effected, these change to yellow. In both tho white and the
pui'ple-colom-ed flowers the column swells after fertilization and its margins close in.

Epiphytal; stem very short. Leaves tlu-ce or four-, fleshy, linear. Eaeeme about
as long as the leaves, few-flowered. Sepals sub-equal, ovato-lanceolate, tlie lateral pair
attached to the base of the column. Petals shorter than the sepals. Column sti'aight,
with a short foot at right angles to itself. Lip attached at right angles to the foot
of the column, as long as the petals, concave, fleshy, lobed or not, apes, broad or
sub-acute, the disc with two or more calli. Stigma large,' orbicular. Anther depressed,
apiculate, shortly beaked in front. PoUinia 2, orbicular or oval, attached by' a subulate
caudicle to a small gland. Capsule cylindiic, ribbed, naiTow. Two.species; Sikkim and
Kliasia.

Garden, Calcutta. Tho oaly spedes at present belonging to it BI e B. Khaaidhn, • publ ished by us in the
Jourii. As. Soo., Bengal, for 1897, and the present plant wliioh was originally published by us in tho
same Journal (Vol. LXIV, pt. 2, 340) under the name Sarcochilus himactilnlvs.. But as the genus
Sarcochilus in the ptssent work is defined exactly as we believe its author deshed that it should
be, this plant cannot be included in it; and, as its chai'acters agree with those of no other genus, we
h a r e been obliged to form one for it reception.
