Cat. 1983; Gen. and Spec. Orchid., 56; Hook. fil. Fl. Br. Ind. V, 7c9.
Sikkim; at elevations fi'om 1,500 to 6,000 feet; Pantling, No. 50; in flower during
June and July.
The flowers are white, the sepals and petals being semi-transparent when fi'esh.
This species has the umbellate inflorescencc, the comparatively short dorfal sepal,
and the elongated lateral sepals which are tho only tangible characters by which
Ciirhopeialum is distinguished from Bulhophnllam. We have therefore removed it from
the latter to the former genus. In tho Lindley Orchid Herbai-ium preserved at Kew,
there is a cobured drawing (No. 1132 without specimen) named in Lindley's own handwriting
" Bulbophyllum caudatum." This has much shorfer lateral sepals than the plant
liere figured, but in other respects it agrees well with it. The shortness of tho sepals
depicted in Lindley's drawiug may be accounted for by the points, which are extremely
thin and fragile, having been broken off. It is possible, however, that they never wore
longer; for there is considerable vaiiation as to the length of the lateral sepals in the
species of Chrhopelahm {e.g. C. ornalismixm in which they are prolonged into hair-points).
The plant named C. eaudaium by Wight is really C. vaginalvm, Lindl., and is a Malayan
