The flowers are probably of a reddish-brown colour when fresh. The specimens
from which the dra-ning was made wore uot quite fresh, and we are doubtful about

about the middle a short transverso horizontal sub-truucate emarginato plate and, at it»
base Just above the insertion of the lip, a sub-crect, rigid, transversely and unequally
2-lobed flcsliy tongue-liko proccss half as long as itself. Antlier opening vertically;

Sikkim Himalaya, at Choongtong; elevation C,000 feet; in flower dui-ing September;
Pantling No. 420.
The pollen masses arc attached by their bases to the sti-ap-shaped rostelium, which
is not detachable from the top of the stigma. They appear to fertilize the latter by
the gradual absorption aud disappearance of the rostelium. Tho nearest alliance of tho
genus is with Limodonm, some of the species of which have small processes on the column
in the situation of those that arc so highly developed iu this singular plant; tho lip iu
Limodonm is, however, altogether different.
The colour of tho flowers is pale yellow, with a pui-plo blotch on the lip and on
the bifid tongue at the base of the column.
PLATE ^ii.—Pantliiigia paradoxn, Prain. Two plants, of naiiiml usi. Pig. 1 a flower, 2 bract,
