THE very elegant fpecies here reprefcnted is a native of the fouthern polar regions, and has

yellow, and can be erefted at the pleafure of the bird, but are generally carried in a decumbent
pofture, as reprefcnted in the figure. The feathers on the top of the head arc of a loofer texture
than in other birds of this genus, and ftand in a more upright pofition. The bill in the
living bird is reddiih. The head and whole upper part of the bird is black: the lower part
white; the breaft (lightly marked with a few patches of blackiih. The infides of the wings
arc dull yellowifh white, with a patch of blackiih at the tip: the legs and feet bright yellow;
the claws black. This fpecies is remarkable for frequently leaping out of the water in its progrefs,
for which reafon it has been called by navigators by the name of the hopping Pmgum,

inftead of it has a yellow ftripe or mark over each eye.
