THE genus Amaryllis, fo confpicuous for the beauty of its appearance, contains a number of
ipecies, moil of which are natives of the warmer climates, and are particularly found in the
intenor parts of Afia and Africa. The plant figured on the prefent Plate is amongft the rarer
^ecies, and is faid to be of American extraaion; but it is alfo found at the Cape of Good
Hope, from whence ,t was introduced into this country about the year 1767. Confidered as
a Ipecies, it ,s remarkable for the delicacy rather than the fplendour of its appearance, and
alls far Ihort of the richnefs difplayed by many of its auguft affociates; fome of which exhibit
the utmoft elegance both of form and colour; the Ama^^llis vittata, or foperb Amaryllis
being one of the moft diftinguiihed beauties of the vegetable kingdom, while the Amaiyllis
tormoliiiima, or Jacoba=an Amaryllis, is of a colour fo fuperlatively brilliant as almoft to dazzle
the eye of the fpeftator.
