THE genus Lemur, according to the natural charafters by which quadrupeds are diftinguiihed,
Hands next to that of Simia, to which feme of the fpecies are nearly allied; poffeffmg the aftivity
and vivacity of the monkey tribe, without any of the mifchievous qualities which fo ftrikingly
diftmguift that reftlefs race. Some fpeeies however of Lemur are much lefs aftive than
others, and there is one fpecies, viz. the Lemur tardigradus, which is diftinguiilied by the unp
i i m o n flownefs of its motions. In habit or general appearance alfo the feveral fpecies of
Lemur differ greatly; fome being furnilhed with tails of a great length, while the Lemur tardigradus
above mentioned wants that part altogether. Moft of the fpecies, inftead of (harpened
Claws, have nails fimilar to thofe of feveral monkeys; and fometimes the inner toe of the hindeet,
or that next the thumb, is armed' with a fliarp crooked claw, while the reft of the toes
