SPECIFIC CHARACTER, &c.
Antholyza with Incurved corols, the two alternate lobes of the five-cleft lip larger and lanceolate.
Broad-leaved Antholyza. HORT. KEW.
THE Antholyza ^thiopica is chiefly dlftlnguiflied from the reft of its genus by the fuperior
breadth of its leaves, as well as by the difpofition and form of the flowers, which, Inftead of
rlfmg upwards, incline in a curved dlreftion, and bend fomewhat downwards on each fide of
the fpike. In point of colour the flowers of this fpecies fcarcely yield to thofe of the Antholyza
Cunonia, or fcarlet-flowered Antholyza, defcrlbed at Plate II. and are of a rich orange-red,
ftrongly tending to yellow at the lower part of the flower. The root is moderately large and
rounded (and annually produces a lateral oiFset, by which the plant is continued). It is a
native of the Cape of Good Hope. The different Ipecies of this genus vary from each other
confiderably in the ftrufture of the flower, and Linnaeus, with his ufual accuracy, has taken
care to obferve this. In fome fpecies the faux or mouth of the flower Is inflated, and fomewhat
comprefled; in others the corolla is infiindibuliform, or funnel-fliaped: in fome the lower
lip of the flower is very ihort; in fome the alternate laciniae, or iegments of the corolla, are
fliortened, as it were; and, lailly, in fome ipecies the flower Is hypocratcriform, or falverfliaped,
and furniflied with fix divifions or fegments of equal length.
