CHARACTER GENERICUS.
Roßrum polyedrum, re£tum: apice cuneato.
Nares pennis fetaceis recumbentibus obteftas.
Lingua teres, lumbriciformis, longiffima, mucronata, apice retrorfum aculeata iètis.

CHARACTER SPECIFICUS.
Pious viridis, ilibtus ca^ralefcens, vertice uropygioque flavis, gula remigibus reftricibiifque
nigris.
GENERIC CHARACTER.
B m polyedral, ftrait, with cuneated tip.
Nojlrih covered with recumbent fetaceous feathers.
Tongue very long, worm-ihaped, iharp-pointed and aculeated at the tip with reverfed briilles.
Feet formed for climbing.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER.
Green Woodpecker, blueifli beneath, with yellow crown and rump, and black throat, wing,
and tail-feathers.
THIS bird, which is a new and hitherto undefcribed Ipecies, is a native of the ifland of Ceylon.
In fize it is at leaft equal to the Picus viridis, or common green Woodpecker, fo well known
in our own country. It is alio llrongly allied in general appearance to that fpecies, but wants
the red colour on the head, which is of a beautiful rich yellow. The lower part of the back
and the tail-coverts are alfo of the fame colour. The breaft and abdomen are of a blueifh aihcolour.
The principal or moft ftriking mark of this ipecies is the large oval patch of glofly
blue-black fituated immediately under the throat, and which is alfo furrounded by a band of •
white. The legs and feet are olive-coloured.
