THE fpecies to which the bird here reprefented are moft nearly allied are the Ardea grifea and
Ardea virefcens of Linnoeus. In colour however it differs from both thoie fpecies. T h e prevailing
colour of this bird on the upper parts is brown ; the long wing-feathers and thofe of
the tail being nearly black: the long-feathers of the wings are alfo marked at their tips with
a fpot of white : the larger coverts are marked in the fame manner, and the fmaller coverts,
or thofe on the ihouiders, are edged with white, caufing the appearance of numerous white
ftri^e. T h e crown of the head is black, and the feathers loofe and fomewhat elongated : behind
each eye is a fmall oblong patch of bl a ck: the cheeks and the upper part of the fides of
the neck are pale ferruginous; the throat and fore part of the neck white, thickly fpotted with
marks of black pointing downwards: towards the bottom of the breail: the white colour grows
more obfcure, or tinged with brown, and is marked with fimllar fpots to the upper part. T h e
abdomen, thighs, and vent, are pale brown: the thighs minutely (potted with longitudinal black
marks. T h e bill and legs are deep brown. It Is an inhabitant of South America.
