S P E C I F I C CHARACTER.
Ferruginous-brown Loxia, purple beneath undulated with black, with blueifli front and rump.
The female has the head^ neck^ and whole under parts, bright ferruginous, and brown wings.
THIS bird, which Mr . Mi l ler, in the annexed Plate, has called Fringilla brevicola, I have rather
chofen to refer to the genus Loxia; as the chara61:ers of this genus are much more ftriking in
this Ipecies than thofe of Fringilla. There are feveral Eaft India fpecies of the genus Loxia
which are very nearly allied to each other; and the fame Is the cafe in the genus Fringilla.
The prefent fpecies does not appear to be generally known. It is a native of the liland of
Ceylon. In the fuppofed male the fore part of the head is of a pale blue: the rump is alfo
of the fame colour: the neck, hind part of the head, back, and long feathers of the wings,
are b rown: the fhoulders and tail ferruginous-brown, the latter tipped with white : the wingcoverts
ilightly edged and tipped with white, and thofe neareft the back with blueiih afli-colour:
the breaft and belly purple-ferruginous undulated with blacklfli; the vent white; the bill and
legs reddifli-brown. In the fuppofed female the whole head, neck, and under parts of the body,
are of a very bright ferruginous: the wings and tail brown; the lower furface of the tail aihcoloured;
