T H E R E is no reafon for fuppofing this bird to be fpecifically different from the Loxia Dominicana
of LinnEcus, or the Dominican Cardinal-bird. The circumftance in which it differs is
that the head is adorned with a veiy confpicuous creft of a lliarpened form, which is not
obfervable in the common Cardinal-bird. It is a native of South America, and particularly
of Brafil. The common Dominican Cardinal-bird has been elegantly figured in the natural
hiftoi-y of birds by the late Mr. Edwards. It is a fpecies of a lively difpofition.
The Butterfly, figured as an ornament to the Plate, belongs to the feftion called by Linnicus
Heliconii, which are diftinguifhed from the reft by the lengthened ihape of the wings.
