Falco cera orbitis pedibufque luteis, corpore grifeo-undulato, vertice abdomine remigum re6i:ricumque

reftricefque bafi albge fafciis numerofis nigris.

Bill hooked, the bafe furnilhed with a cere.
Head clofely covered with feathers.
Tongue bifid.
SPECIFIC CHARACTER, &c.
Falco with cere orbits and legs yellow, body undulated with grey, top of the head, abdomen,
and tips of the wing and tail feathers black.
The ihoulders and middle part of the wings are brown, the fecondary coverts ftriated with
paliih and brown, and the wing and tail feathers are white at the bafe, crofled with numerous
black bars.

THE large and elegant Falco here reprefented is a native of the antarftic regions, and is found
at Terra del Fuego. It is fomewhat more than two feet in length, and is of a fl:out aqtiiline
form. In its colours it is more elegant than many of its genus. The bill is brown: the cere,
and a broad fpace round the region of the eyes, of a bright orange: the top of the head is
black, and the feathers being fomewhat lengthened, form a {liort creft. The neck, breaft, and
back, are of a pale brownifh a(li-colour, undulated or crofled with numerous ftria: of deepbrown
or blackifh. The coverts of the wings, and the middle feathers, are deep-brown; the
larger coverts barred with brown and white. The exterior long-feathers of the wings black;
but the interior ones white, barred with brown, and with black tips. The lower belly is black:
the vent yellowifli-brown, undulated with blackifli flireaks: the tail white, with very numerous
blackifli bars, and the tip is entirely black. The legs are yellow, and the claws black.
