THIS very curious animal, which in its general appearance forms fo near an approach to the
human figure, ranks among the genuine Apes, or Simix ecaudatas of Linnxus. It feems to
vary more in point of colour than moft others of its genus ; being fometimes found fpotted with
patches of white, and fometimes even entirely fo; a remarkable inftance of which occurs in the
Levei-ian Mufeum, and is moft elegantly figured in the fécond number of the Mufeum Leverianum.
Mr. Pennant alfo, in the laft edition of his Hiftory of Quadrupeds, has given a figure
of the felf-fame individual, and feems not to confider it as fpecifically different from the black
kind exhibited in the prefent Plate. This fpecics of Ape is faid to be more gentle in its difpofition
than moft others. It is principally found in India, as well as in the Molucca Iflands,
Sumatra, &c. and grows to about the height of four feet.
