S P E C I F I C CHARACTER.
Strait-billed green Humming-bird, with the body black beneath, with three white fpots on each
fide.
IN determining the f|)ecies of Trochili or Humming-birds naturalifts are involved in confiderable
difficulties, fince (exclufive of the fexual difference, which in thefe birds is very great)
they do not gain their full or true plumage till a very confiderable time has elapfed; perhaps
not till the third year; and in their lefs advanced flate appear in a far different habit from that
which accompanies their mature age. The genus is divided into the ifrait-billcd fpecies, or
reftiroftres, and the crooked-billed, or curviroftres. It is in the former divifion that the prefent
fpecies ranks. In general the colours in this diminutive genus are in the higheft degree
lively and radiant; in the bird here figured they are not fo remarkable for their fplendcr. The
upper part of the bird is of a deep green, with a flight golden glofs, while the lower part of
the body is of a deep black, ornamented on each fide with three oblong marks or patches of
white: the coverts of the wings are brown: the long-feathers blackilh, flightly edged with
whitilh, and afli-coloured beneath: the tail deep black above, with a blueifli glofs, and paler
beneath. This bird is one of the larger fpecies of the genus. It is a native of South America.
