S P E C I F I C CHARACTER, 8cc.
Shrubby Gnaphalium, with feffile ovate thick-fet ereft leaves, and cluftered flowers.
Elichryfum Africanum, &c. EDWAKDS, t. 183.
THE beautiful fpecies of Gnaphalium here reprefented is a native of the Cape of Good Hope,
and is one of the moll fuperb plants of its genus. It is figured in the natural hiftory of Mr.
Edwards, at plate 183, but, by a miftake in the drawing, it is there reprefented as producing
lateral bunches of flowers. The leaves alfo in Mr. Edwards's figure are fomewhat too narrow
and iharp-pointed. The ftem is fomewhat ftrong, or flirubby, and of the thlcknefs of a
finger: the corymbus, or head of flowers, is terminal, and confiils of a great number of
flowers, each fiirniflied with its particular foot-fl:alk. The colour of the flowers is a bright
rofe-colour, fliaded by orange, and ilrongly tinged towards the lower part with a copper-red.
The leaves are oval, fomewhat inclining to iharp-pointed, and coated with a thick white
down. It is remarkable that this moft elegant plant has not yet been procured recent from
its native regions, fo that all the figures and defcriptions yet given have been taken from dried
fpeeimens.
