The common Caflbwary, or Galeated Caflbwaiy.
THE CaiTowary is one of thofe birds which Nature feems to have confined to the limits of
the torrid zone; it being principally found in the Molucca lilands, Banda, Sumatra, Java, and
fome other parts. It is not much inferior in fize to the Oftrich, but the neck is much ihorter
in proportion. The whole body is of a deep black, and covered with feathers of a peculiar ftruaurc; each feather confifting of two plumes, united at the bafe or quill part. Thefe
plumes are of a confiderable length, efpecially on the rump, where they fupply as it were the
place of a tail. The beak is very ftout, fharp-pointed, and of a blackifh colour. On the head
IS a very ftrong horny callus, or helmet, of a fomewhat compreffed form, and rifing upwards
