1 HE charafter of this genus is marked by an appearance fo fingular as to ilrike even the moil
fnperficial obferver; the beak, which is of a depreflid or flattened form, being dilated at the
extremity mto a broad rounded expanfion, not ill refembling the end of a fpoon or fmall ladle.
It IS an aquatic bird, and belongs to the tribe of Gralla;, or half-web-footed water-birds. It
builds however on trees, in which particular it differs from the major part of that tribe The
Cze of the Spoon-bill is fomewhat fmaller than that of a goofe: the hind part of the head is
llightly crefted: die colour of the whole bird is white, except the rips of the remiges, or long
wing-tiathers, which are black. The bill is black, fomerimes flightly fpeckled with paler
