thousand to ten thousand feet, in H y p p izh ed and Storrelse
men H o rd en ; at Hac ien d a de Sta An n a , in the D ep a rtm en t of
Oajaca, at five thousand to six thousand feet; at Chinautla, in
the D ep a rtm en t of P u eb la , from seven thousand to eight
thousand feet; on Pico de Orizaba in baranks or ju n g le s ; about
V aq u e ria del Ja c a l at te n thousand feet.
I t is a very variable species, increasing in abundance and
size with the height. Sometimes bipinnate, at others tr ip in n a te ;
the pinnules also variable in size, form, and hairyness.
Cheilanthes minor is a form of C. lendigera; growing on dry
h o t cliffs in the lower regions of this species.
This P e rn is best known in gardens u n d e r the name of
C. fr ig id a . The C. lendigera of gardens is the C. elegans.
F ro n d s ovate-lanceolate, tripinnate. P innæ a lte rn a te ; pinnules
orbicular, sessile; sterile pinnules crenate lo b a te ; fertile pinnules
sub-globose, owing to the considerable reflexion of th e ir margins;
glabrous on th e u p p e r surface, below densely covered with
len g th y hairs.
Caudex creeping, and covered with brown chaffy hairs. Stipes
and rachis brown, and densely covered with long brown hairs.
In dusium membranaceous, forming a broad continuous white
marginal belt.
L en g th of frond from twelve to eighteen inches; colour a
dull green.
