Sir William H o o k e r gives four forms of the P te r is aquilina,
namely, glabra, lanuginosa, caudata, and esoulenta.
T h e form glabra is our P te r is aquilina, and it occurs also
in N o rth e rn Asia and N o rth America. I n the H ig h lan d s of
Scotland it is fou n d two thousand feet above the sea level,
growing ill sh e lte red situations to the h e ig h t o f six fe e t; whilst
on H e lv e ly n , at th e same elevation, it scarcely attains as many
inches. Messina, Madeira, Cape of Good H o p e , China, Ja v a ,
Guatemala, and Brazil.
