SUGAR-BERRY OR HACK-B ERRY.
S. alis integris: pofticis albis fafciis duabus Aigris, abdomine niveo cittgulis tenuiflimis faigris.
T a k e n feeding on t h e Sugar-berry or Ha ck-berry, b u t it is moft frequent on th e
Plum. I t w e n t in to the ground Ju n e lo th , forming a chryfalis which is like th a t
o f th e Englifli Privet Haw k -m o th , and th e fly appeared on th e 17th o f April. I t
is not common.
Mr. Abbot has denominated this the Plum Sphinx, or Privet Sphitix likenefs. Indeed it
fo nearly refe'mbles the S. Ligujtri, in all its Hates, that it might almoft pafs for a variety.
Its moft ftriking difference at firft light is the total want of a red colour about the abdomen
and under wings; yet we have not ventured in the cafe of the American S. Convolvuli to found
a fpecific character on fuch a circumftance alone. The beft, and probably all-fuflicient, dif-
tindtions of S. Drupferarum appear-to be the narrownefs of the black circles of the abdomen,
the dilated brown mark and three black lines along its back, and there being but two black
ftripes, inftead of three, on the hind wings. This fpecies Ihould be inferted next to S. Li-
guftri. We do not find that any author has noticed it, except it might be Cramer’s Gordius}
tab. 247, B, which we think fcarcely pofiible.
