T h e caterpillar feeds on th e highland as well as th e fwamp papaw; an d haying
tied itfelf up th e 22d.of May, changed to a chryfalis the 24th. T h e fly came out
Ju n e l6 th . I t continues breeding all th e fummer. One th a t un d erwen t its change
in autumn, came out th e 10th o f March following. This fpecies is n o t very common
in Georgia, though much more fo th an in Virginia. I t flies very fwift,
hovering about the blofloms o f fruit-trees, and often fucks damp places in yards,
when it may be ealily taken.
There is the greateft affinity between this fly and the European P. Podalirius, infomuch
that it is very difficult to make a fpecific chara&er. which lhall diftinguiih them. It will
readily be perceived for what reafons we have diflented from thofe given by preceding authors.
The character of Podalirius too will require correction; for the line on the under-
fide of its hind wings, and the. angulus ani, are orange-coloured, rather than fanguineous.
In the caterpillar Hate thefe two infedts differ confiderably, that of Podalirius not having
either the horns of.ours, nor.the tranfverfe black, blue, and yellow ffripe. There is another
fpecies very like both the above in. the laft ftate, P. Protefilaus; but its larva is defcribed as
being black and fpinous.
