(Fagus puniila), See. I t fpun up 15th May, and came o u t 16th June. Another
wh ich ipun September 5th, came out 2d March following. I t attaches its web to
th e under fide o f a leaf, taking care to fpin round th e ftalk o f th e lea f and a p a rt o f
th e twig, b y which means th e chryfalis is kept from falling off during winter.
Under every red ip o t on th e caterpillar is fometimes, b u t n o t always, a fpeck o f
b rig h t filver. T h e caterpillar in our figure is fomewhat lefs than its full fize. This
kind has been bred in England. Th e moths o f th e Emperor tribe in general are
called Silkworms b y th e people o f Georgia.
The fpecies of oak here delineated is unqueftio'nably a new one, and may be charadterifed
foJiis fiibtus pubefeentibus duplicate lobatis fcabriufculis: /obis lobidifque rotundatis, which are nearly
the words of Dr. Solander. The leaves are faid to be deciduous. Their rough upper furface
is remarkable in the fpecimens in Sir Jofeph Banks’s herbarium.
