One .of thefe caterpillars was found feeding on the black fnake-root, Ariftolochia
ferpentaria, and attached itfelf to th e branch b y its tail, th e 24th o f April. Tw o
days afterwards it changed to a chryfalis, and th e fly appeared May 4th. A n other
fpun itfelf up June 20th, changed 2 ift, and th e fly came o u t on the 5th
• o f July.
This is one o f the molt common butterflies, frequently feen on th e blofloms
o f the peach and other trees in th e fpring, and is no lels plentiful in Virginia.
Th e re trad ile horns o f this caterpillar feem appropriated to th e fwallow-tail
tribe.
There is no difficulty in determining this fpecies, though the female has much left of the
green hue, except in fome particular lights, than the male.
