Papilio Thaumas. Fair. Eniom. emend. V. 4. 327?
T h i s caterpillar was taken upon th e Sijyrinchium, b u t is moft frequent on crab
grafs ('Panicum Janguinale) . On the lg th o f Auguft it fpun the leaves togeth
e r for a fhelter, like th e reft o f this tribe, changed th e next day, and on the
30th th e butterfly came forth. I t is alfo a native o f V irginia, and the fly is n o t
uncommon on various kinds o f blofloms.
This fly has confiderable affinity with that in the next plate, and dill more with the Lin-
nasan P. Comma, at lead: fuch is the appearance of that figure juft above the caterpillar, which
alfo comes fo near the defeription of Fabricius’s Thaumas, we are almoft perfuaded they mud:
be the fame. We certainly cannot but truft to Mr. Abbot for the uppermoft figure not being
a diftindt fpecies; but if it fhopld hereafter prove fo, our fpecific character will beft apply
' to that figure, and the lower one, if not Thaumas, will require a new name, and a character
in which the interfered black line of the upper wings, and the orange-coloured difk of the
under ones, fhould be comprehended.
