T h is beautiful kind feeds on th e Indian Corn or Maize, as well as Dogwood ( Cor-
nus), Saflafras, &c. I t Iptin up 27th September, appeared on th e win g th e 17th
o f May, and continued coming out a t different times till th e 15 th o f Auguft following.
Others th a t fpun up 24th Ju ly came o u t 25th Auguft. T h e Caterpillar ftirigs
very feverely, and enclofes itfelf in a brow n web on th e leaves. I t is n o t very
common, and is a remarkably tender fly to keep in cabinets, th e male fooner decaying
th an any other. W h e n young thefe caterpillars feed many in a company
together.
We believe no author has noticed this infedt before Fabricius, and that no figure of-it has
yet been publifhed, though there are fome near it in Cramer, tab. 249 and 268; the circum-
ftance of its having the fame kind of eye-like fpot on the under fide of the fore wings, that it
has on the upper fide of the hind ones, is very peculiar. It is properly arranged by Fabri-
cius next to Phaleena Tau, and the name of Iota, had it not been preoccupied by another fpe-
cies, would have been an excellent one for this.
