Sphinx Hylasus. Fair. Entom. emend. V 4. 373. Entry's Inf. V. 2. t. 26. f . 3. Cram. Pap. 1.1 Of. f . C?
T h is caterpillar was taken feeding on the Gall-berry bufh in M ay, and w e n t into
the ground th e 17 th o f th a t month, coming forth as a fly the 19th o f June. An other
buried itfelf Auguft 26, and remained in th e earth till the 26th o f April. T h e
caterpillar is very apt to be wounded b y a finall Ichneumon, th e worms o f which,
w hen fatisfied w ith feeding, e a t their w a y o u t o f its body, and fpin themfelves up
on th e outfide. T h e moth is n o t very common, b u t may fometimes b e found
fucking th e blofloms o f gourds in an evening.
The reafons we have offered for changing the name of the preceding fpecies muft form our
apology in the prefent inftance. Hylasus, the name of a dog, has no natural nor fanciful
connedtion with this infedt, and could be tolerated only till we became acquainted with its
natural food. Notwithftanding the great difference of fize, our S. Print has great affinity with
the S. Chionanthi, infomuch that no defcription can difcriminate their upper wings. The
want of yellow fpots on the abdomen of that now before us makes their effential difference,
to which might be added that the head of this is of an uniform brown, not white on the fum-
mit, and its thorax much lefs variegated than in the other. In a fyftematic arrangement thefe
two fpecies and S. Carolina ought certainly to ftand together, and it is matter of wonder how
fo good a writer as Fabricius fhould have placed them fo very far afunder.
If the figure of Cramer above quoted be intended for this moth, it is extremely inaccurate,
and gives fcarcely any idea of it; nor can we believe that author to have fallen fo far fhort of
the ufual merit of his work. He muft mean a different infedt.
