Papilio C. aureum. Linn. Syft. Nat. 778. Fair. Entom. emend. V. 4. 78.
T h is feeds upon the plant called W a rh ew , which is v e ry like th e European lime-
tree, except in being always a low bufh or flirub; it eats alfo the fugar berry and
the elm.- I t fufpended itfelf by the tail May 29th, changed 30th, appeared on the
win g Ju n e 7th. This fpecies frequents fwamps and oak woods, b u t is n o t very
common. T h e butterfly lives all the w in te r in places o f fhelter, coming forth
very early in th e fpring. I t occurs likewife in Virginia.
Fabricius obferving a tail to the hind wings of this fpecies, reformed the Linnaean fpecific
character. But as the fpecimen of Linnasus has much lefs of a projection in that part, We
have ufed a medium term, fubcaudatis. In the Syft. Nat. the fly is faid to come from Alia.
Pofiibly the Afiatic kind may be diftindt from the American; but here we riiuft again fiif-
pend our decifion, till we know both in all their Rates.
