I ts caterpillar eats the plan t here reprefented, wh ich grows plentifully in corn-;
fields in the fpring. One. o f them fufpended itfelf April 16th, changed the 18th,
an d became a butterfly May 4th. This fpecies continues breeding till late in the
autumn, and is v ery common, frequenting damp places.
Few butterflies are. more variable than P. Orythia, at leaft few are more different at firff
fight than thofe which entomologifts of the firff rank have agreed to refer to this fpecies.
The moft remarkable variety is one whofe hind wings are of a bright blue. Their metamor-.
phofes being as yet unknown, we muff accede implicitly to the general opinion, till thefe
infedts can be better examined. This blue variety may be feeh, though vaftly overdone; in.
