Papilio Argiolus. L im. Syft. Nat. 790.
T he caterpillar was tak e n feeding on the p lan t here reprefentcd; it alfo eats the'
red root or red thank, b u t is rarely to b e met w ith , though th e butterfly is often
feen b o th in Georgia and Virginia. Its firfl change took place on th e 16th o f June,
and th e fly appeared nine days afterwards.
That this is certainly no other than the Argiolus of Linnasus, an' Englifh infedt, appears
from his own cabinet.- We do not anfwer for its name in other writers, and therefore have
not hazarded any fynonyms. Nothing is more pernicious than the too'ufual way of copying
fynonyms upon truft without examination, by which we fo frequently find not only errors
of judgment propagated from one author to another, but alfo errors o f the prefs; by thefe
laft fuch indolent plagiaries are fure to be detected.
