T h i s caterpillar feeds on th e different kinds o f Wild Grapes. On th e 12 th o f Ju n e
i t enclofed itfelf in a cafe under ground, and th e perfect infect came out March 13 th
following. I t flies by day, fometimes fucking plum bloflbms, b u t is n o t very common.
I t may b e obferved in th e woods, generally fettling o n a V ine, or on the
Dog-wood; and w h e n difturbed w ill fly very fwiftly round about, finally returning
in general to its original fituation. I t is likewife found in Virginia.
In habit and larva this infeCt certainly agrees with the family of Linnsean Sphinges, to which
we have referred it, which are Zygana of Fabricius, and not to thofe of which he has com?
pofed his genus Sefia- His generic characters of both are very infufficient for difcrimination,
but it feems very probable that Zygana ought to be efteemed diftinCt from the real genus of
Sphinx, confidering the larva of both.
